Using Counterfeit Money Detection Methods

By Traci Witt

People have been attempting to defraud the United States Treasury department for a very long time. It is for this very reason that the United States government has put so much time and effort into counterfeit money detection measures over the years. For the most part they have been very successful. It is much harder to fool them today.

Prior to many of the steps being taken to safeguard out money there was a possibility of people printing money with a very good color printer. The kind that are available at a computer store. While the money made in such a way may look good at first glance, it would not fool a seasoned cashier or store clerk.

They would take their shavings and melt it down so they could use it to cover cheaper metals or base metals like copper. They would then have a coin made from cheap metal that was readily available but it would be covered or plated in the expensive material so that it would at least appear to be the real deal. This is why it was common for people to bite the money to check it authenticity.

Another method to detecting fake currency is to simply compare it with a different bill but of the same denomination. When compared side by side you will be able to notice the differences between the real one and the fake one. Even if the fake one was really well done it could never look exactly the same as a real on side by side.

Even today people continue the practice of trying to make counterfeit currency. The modern technology available today to just about anyone has made it much easier for people to produce the paper version of currency that we have all gotten used to. There are various countermeasures that the US government for example uses to attempt to thwart those who would try to defraud the US Treasury.

Beyond the strip there is a special pen that people at a store, or anywhere else, can buy that uses a special ink. This ink, when written onto a bill will change color to alert the clerk to the fact that the bill is not authentic. At this point they can get their manager and they can let the customer know they have a fake bill. Not all cases are intentional.

Sometimes a counterfeit bill can get accepted somewhere and end up making it through the system. It is not common but it has happened here and there. Such things are usually caught at the bank level before getting put back into circulation. This was more common 20 years ago before the metal strip was included and the pen with special ink was introduced.

Counterfeit money detection is not a very difficult thing to accomplish. All of the measures that have been taken to make sure that currency is very hard to duplicate makes it easy to spot a fake today. This is something that the governments of the world will have to stay vigilant with however because as long as currency exists so too will counterfeiters.
